Sandy Bear Children's Bereavement Charity

About us

Sandy Bear is a registered charity, providing a service to all children and young people up to 18 years who have suffered, or who are to suffer, a bereavement and live in Pembrokeshire.

We are committed to helping any child and family within our community, before or after a bereavement, by providing professional, compassionate care and support.

We exist to improve the life outcomes of children and young adults who have been bereaved by the death of a significant person in their lives or are facing such a death. We work to support their mental, emotional, and spiritual needs, whilst alleviating physical distress and improving their overall resilience to benefit their developing needs.

We focus on listening to the child and ensuring they are able to voice in their own words and with their own understanding, their story about the bereavement they have experienced or their fears about what they will experience. This helps them to begin to address and make sense of their grief.

Alongside working with individual children, we support parents and/or carers, particularly of younger children, to develop understanding about how children grieve and to identify effective ways of supporting their child, promoting communication and addressing behaviour issues.

Sandy Bear works hard to draw out how a child is feeling to get to the heart of the child’s understanding about what has happened in their life. We do this to move that child into a more positive place and make sure that the child fully understands what has happened to them and their loved one.
